How to shop with ChatGPT

You can use ChatGPT to request meal ideas and recipes, or get help with building a cart on Instacart.

  1. Go to chatgpt.com or open the ChatGPT app.
  2. Go to Settings > Apps > search for Instacart and hit Connect.
  3. Approve or Deny the connection to Instacart and associated data sharing to create a delivery order. If you Approve, confirm the connection by selecting Continue to Instacart.
  4. Enter your Instacart login information and select Continue. You’ll receive a 6-digit code to the email you provided at login. Enter the code provided.
  5. Enter your question or request that relates to meal ideas, recipes or grocery shopping into ChatGPT.
    1. Examples include, but are not limited to—
      1. I want a recipe for chicken enchiladas with ingredients from @Instacart
      2. Create an @Instacart shopping list that includes eggs, milk, and bread.
      3. It’s Friday! I’d like to order pizza and ice cream from @Instacart.
  6. Once you approve Instacart, ChatGPT will ask you to choose your delivery address. If you don’t see your address listed, select the expand arrows icon.
    1. Note, you can only select from existing addresses added to your ChatGPT account when you created your account. 
    2. If you need to add a new address, you will need to add the address to your Instacart account and place the order through Instacart’s app or website.
  7. ChatGPT will show a list of available retailers through Instacart. Enter a retailer’s name to start your order.
  8. ChatGPT will then create a cart with items related to your question or request. You can ask ChatGPT to add, remove, or change items. 
  9. Select Checkout.
  10. Confirm your address and add an optional tip.
  11. Select Continue to Payment.
    1. Apple Pay and Google Pay are accepted as a form of payment. This functionality is available exclusively for Web and app.
    2. You can use the payment method linked to your ChatGPT account, or add a new payment method during checkout. Note, if you add a new payment it only saves to your ChatGPT account and not your Instacart account.
  12. Select Pay Instacart.
  13. ChatGPT will show your placed order. Select Track on Instacart to see you order’s status.

How to shop with Claude

You can browse and build a cart from Instacart directly inside Claude until it's time to pay.

  1. Open Claude and type a message that mentions Instacart. Examples include, but are not limited to—
    1. Find me chicken enchilada ingredients on Instacart.
    2. Create an Instacart shopping list that includes eggs, milk, and bread.
    3. Order pizza and ice cream from Instacart tonight.
  2. Claude will ask permission to connect to your Instacart account. Select Allow to continue.
  3. You'll be taken to Instacart to sign in (or confirm your account if you're already logged in). If you're new to Instacart, enter your delivery address to get started.
  4. Choose a store from the list of available retailers near you. You can also change your delivery address to a previously saved address here if needed.
  5. Claude builds your cart based on your request. You can ask it to add, remove, or swap items, just type what you'd like to change.
  6. When you're ready, select Checkout on Instacart. You'll be redirected to Instacart to confirm your address, add an optional tip, and complete payment.
  7. You can then make order changes or track your delivery through Instacart.com or the Instacart app.

How to shop with Gemini

Gemini can help you build a grocery list for Instacart. You can only use this for delivery, not for picking up food yourself. After you make your list, you'll finish paying in the Instacart app. This is only available to users in the US.

How to connect Instacart to Gemini:

There are two ways to tell Gemini you want to use Instacart:

  • Option A: Talk to Gemini
    1. Start a chat with Gemini and ask for groceries, making sure to say the word "Instacart". For example, you could say: "Help me order groceries for mushroom risotto on Instacart," or "Where can I get groceries delivered with Instacart?"
    2. A box will pop up asking to connect Instacart. Follow the steps to link your accounts.
  • Option B: Connect in the Settings
    1. Go to the place where Gemini keeps track of its "Connected Apps".
    2. Find Instacart and follow the steps to connect it.

How to build your shopping list:

Once they are connected, you can tell Gemini what to put in your cart:

  1. Pick a store. If you didn't say where to shop, a list of stores will show up. Choose the one you want.
  2. Ask for items. You can ask for one thing, a full recipe, or a long list. For example: "Add everything I need to make chicken piccata," or "Add all these things: eggs, milk, and bread."
  3. Change your cart. You can always ask Gemini to add, take away, or change the amount of any item.
  4. Look at choices. If you want to see different kinds of something, ask! For example: "Show me options for chips."
  5. Check out! When your list is ready, press the Checkout button. This will send you to the Instacart app to finish paying and confirming your delivery details.

How to shop with Muse

Muse is Meta's AI assistant. You can build a grocery cart in Muse and finish paying in the Instacart app. Muse connects to Instacart automatically when you ask for groceries, so you don't need to say "Instacart." This is only available to users in the US.

  1. Start a grocery conversation in Muse. Muse connects to Instacart automatically.
  2. If it's your first time, Muse asks you to connect your Instacart account. Select Approve to authorize access.
  3. Sign in to Instacart, or create a new account, then enter your delivery address.
  4. Choose a store from the list of nearby retailers.
  5. Muse builds your cart based on your request. You can ask Muse to add, remove, or change items at any time. Items you add in Muse appear in your Instacart app cart in real time.
  6. When you're ready, select Checkout. You'll be sent to the Instacart app to confirm your delivery details and complete payment.
  7. Track your order in the Instacart app.

The following features are not available for Muse orders: embedded checkout, loyalty and promo pricing, coupons, Instacart ads, pickup, replacement preferences, and browsing by aisle.
