Instacart delivers alcohol, spray paint, and age-restricted over-the-counter (OTC) products in select areas. ID verification is required during delivery.  Some states may require a signature for these products. Check the app or website to see availability in your location.

Valid forms of ID

We accept these IDs for alcohol, OTC, and spray paint deliveries—

  • U.S. driver’s license with photo

  • U.S. military ID

  • State-issued ID card

  • U.S. passport*

  • Green card*

*Green cards and Passports are not accepted from Costco or Walmart.

Alcohol policies

Ordering alcohol

  • You must be 21 or older to order alcohol. 

  • Only alcohol items can replace other alcohol. 

  • Alcohol can’t be added as a special request.

  • Some states limit how much alcohol you can order. If you can't complete your order, try reducing the quantity of alcohol items in your cart.

 

Alcohol delivery

  • Alcohol orders can’t exceed 400 pounds.

  • Shoppers verify IDs by scanning or manually entering details at delivery.* They do not store your information.

  • Alcohol can’t be delivered to visibly intoxicated persons, minors, or those believed to be ordering alcohol for minors. Shoppers will refund the alcohol and return it to the store.

  • Shoppers deliver alcohol directly to recipients and can’t leave it unattended. Delivery fees, tips, or bottle deposit fees may still apply.

*Manual ID entry isn’t available in California, Costco, or Walmart orders.

Delivery to non-retail businesses, such as office buildings, is allowed. However, Instacart does NOT deliver alcohol to the following—

  • Restaurants

  • Storage facilities

  • Locker mailbox or package shipping facilities

  • Correctional facilities (prisons, reformatories, etc.)

  • Retail business (ex. grocery stores, gas stations, liquor stores)

  • College campuses (4 year, 2 year, or trade schools) or official campus housing 

  • Medical facilities (Addiction/rehab/substance abuse centers, mental health facilities, detox centers, etc.)


Delivery to the listed locations may violate laws, regulations, and Instacart’s Terms and Conditions.

Damaged alcohol items

Instacart provides credits or refunds for damaged alcohol due to—

  • Cracked or shattered glass

  • Broken seals

  • Missing or tampered labels

  • Poor bagging

Age-restricted OTC policies

For age-restricted OTC items you must be 18 or older and show an approved ID at delivery. Shoppers will verify your ID by scanning or entering details manually.

Diet pills and diet supplements

In New York, Colorado, and other select states, you must be 18 or older to order diet pills or supplements for weight loss or muscle building. Approved ID and a signature are required at delivery.

Spray paint policies

To order spray paint, you must—

  • Be 18 or 21 years old, depending on where you live.

  • Show an approved ID at delivery.

  • Let the shopper verify your ID by scanning or entering details manually.
