EBT-eligible and non-eligible items

EBT-eligible items generally include most food items intended for home preparation and consumption. Items that are not EBT-eligible include—

  • Alcoholic beverages such as:
    • Beer,
    • Wine
    • Liquor
  • Cigarettes and tobacco
  • Vitamins, medicines, and supplements
    • If an item has a Supplement Facts label, it is considered a supplement and is not eligible for EBT SNAP purchases.
  • Live animals (except shellfish, fish removed from water, and animals slaughtered prior to pick-up from the store).
  • Prepared foods fit for immediate consumption
  • Hot foods
  • Any nonfood items such as:
    • Pet foods
    • Cleaning supplies
    • Paper products
    • Other household supplies
    • Hygiene items
    • Cosmetics

An EBT card can’t cover the cost of delivery and service fees, bottle deposit fees, taxes, tips, and any non-EBT items. To cover these costs, you must also add a valid credit or debit card to your Instacart account.

Note: If you’re ordering through Grubhub (Groceries Powered by Instacart), you can use your EBT card. EBT is not yet available for Seamless or Airbnb Groceries Powered by Instacart orders.

Note: EBT SNAP item restrictions may vary by state. For more information, check out our EBT SNAP item restrictions for select states Help Center article.
